Your first session with Dr. Carl is primarily an opportunity for him to begin to get to know you. Though people are often anxious to ‘get to work,’ or start a medicine, sometimes it is difficult to know how best to advise you until he has a better understanding of the nature of your concerns. He will then work to arrange a follow-up visit where he can continue the conversation and move forward with treatment.
In trying to get a full picture of you as a person, Dr. Carl typically will ask the nature of your current mental health concerns. To put these in perspective, he also will ask about your past experience with treatment, past emotional difficulties, upbringing, developmental history, medical history, substance use history, family history, trauma history, and recent/current stressors. At times these questions may not seem relevant to your current situation, but please trust that your honest and straightforward accounts will help him greatly to provide you the best quality mental health care.
